YCORP : Youth Community Restoration Project

 

CareerWorks / Youth Services

Services Provided: A wide range, including job classes and placement (youth are given a job if they apply themselves and attend school, education assistance, recreational activities, and mentoring.

Who Qualifies: Minors must be between 14-21 and either deficient in literary skills, homeless, a foster child, parenting, an offender, a minority or especially out of school. Their families also must be low income and live in South County.

Referral Process: Have minor and parent fill out application, return to Watsonville Career Center on 18 West Beach Street.

Enterprise Community Youth Network

Services Provided: Job search workshops, help with keeping a job, continuing education, computer skills, office and customer skills. Job placement and occasional special employment programs.

Who Qualifies: Youth must be between 16-25 and live within a certain section of Watsonville.

Youth Employment Strategies  

Services Provided: Job skills, how to keep your job, mock interviews, life skills, job placement and mentoring.                                                                                                                               

Who qualifies: Youth must be on Probation and motivated to find work.  May also be referred if they owe large amounts of restitution.      

Referral process:  this program is run by YCORP, and will be held 6 times/year in Watsonville, Live Oak, and SLV.  The YCORP fax # is (831) 724-0200.

Job Corps

Referral Process:  Orientation/registration meetings are held occasionally in the Watsonville and Capitola career centers.  Youth may contact the recruiter Dave Powler at (831) 636-5194. 

Services Provided: This is a residential, voluntary program.  It offers job training, GED, counseling, dental and medical care, work experience programs, job placement, and post-grad support services.  

Who Qualifies:  Youth between 16-24  who are US citizens, low income, in need of job training, and ready to work. 

Regional Occupational Program

Services Provided:  This is a series of vocational classes covering everything from cosmetology to computer skills.  They are available in all areas of the county, and offer certifications.  Some cost money. 

Who qualifies:  Minors usually must be 16 or older, although there are some exceptions. 

Referral Process:  Contact Tara Fisher, or pick up a sign-up sheet at probation or at the County Office of Education, 809-H Bay Ave., Capitola, CA.

California Conservation Corps

Services Provided:  Career training for jobs such as crew supervision, nursery operation, construction, landscaping, and internship placement.  Members are paid minimum wage less costs for room and board, and earn scholarship money after a year.  There are both residential and non-residential spaces available.

Who qualifies:  This program involves hard physical labor, so youth must be really motivated to join.  In the past, minors have been allowed to come off probation if they had a serious plan to go into the CCC.  Call recruiter Juanita at (888) 531-5627. 

YouthBuild

Services provided: Youth get paid up to $1,042 per month to learn construction skills, build low income housing, and attend classes toward their GED or diploma.  Other wraparound services such as mentoring, community service, and job or educational placement.

Who qualifies:  Youth must live in Watsonville, be between 16-25, and be clean and sober.

Youth Employment Opportunity Program (YEOP)

Helps teens with employment. Teens need to be in school or willing to go back to school. Offers help with the financial-aid process and will help with work interviews.

Escalera

Services provided:  Youth receive counseling, mentoring, and paid work experience through various agencies.

Who qualifies:  Males between 14 and 18 who live in Watsonville.  Must be very low income to qualify for the work component.  Must also be willing to participate in al parts of the program.
